Herman Kotze from Clanwilliam will make the long walk from Cape Town all the way back home in aid of CANSA The Cancer Association of South Africa.

He will arrive in Clanwilliam on Saturday 1 October as part of the 30th anniversary of the Freshpak Fitness Festival, one of the country’s biggest annual multisport events. Herman plans to leave from Green Point, outside the Primedia studios in Cape Town on the 22 September 2016 and walk a total distance of 261kms up the West Coast over 10 days.

He will be stopping off at various towns enroute and is hoping to raise R100 000 towards the CANSA foundation.

Having lost multiple family members to the disease, CANSA is a cause that lies close to Herman’s heart. Herman lost both his parents when he was between the ages of five and six. Years later, he decided to look into their deaths.

He discovered that his mother had died as a result of lung cancer and his father had passed away from a heart attack related to diabetes. Soon thereafter, Herman’s adoptive mother had also been diagnosed with a malignant tumour.

Her health rallied with the help of radiation treatment and she believed that she had beaten the disease, but was sadly later diagnosed with a recurrence of the cancer and passed away. Ina, Herman’s aunt was also diagnosed with cancer and the accumulation of these experiences is what drove Herman to start the walkathon as a fundraiser for CANSA.

Herman hopes to create awareness during his journey to Clanwilliam and the Freshpak Fitness Festival. A percentage of the festival’s proceeds will be donated to CANSA as the event’s official beneficiary.
