Gcobisa NormanGcobisa Norman, Sanparks is an Awesome South African

Gcobisa works as a tourism officer at the Cape Point Nature Reserve.

My wife and I were privileged to be able to do the 2day overnight hike through the Cape Point Nature reserve this last weekend (21-22 March 2015)

Because of the recent fires, the Atlantic side of the reserve is closed to the public and confusion reigned when we set off on our walk. Mis-communication resulted in us walking down the tar road for an hour before we realised something was amiss. We called the number on the map and Gcobisa answered and was horrified that were given the wrong information. She immediately jumped in the Sanparks van and drove out to find us and took us back to the start point and set us off on the right path (this time on the actual False Bay side trail)

We will be posting an article on how AWESOME this Cape Point  EXPERIENCE was in the next few weeks, but today I want to focus on the service and friendliness we received from Gcobisa.

On our check in a few hours later at Buffelsfontein Visitors Centre, she jumped when she saw us and came over immediately inquiring how we were. She took our water bottles and filled them with ice cold water and chatted to us for a while – all this time never stopping with her Awesome Smile.

Every now and then, you meet somebody that loves their work, loves people and is committed to her role. Gcobisa is a true South African ambassador.
She is more than that – Gcobisa is an Awesome South African.

Gcobisa originally studied and worked as a mountain guide for Table Mountain. She loved the interactions with people and especially being outdoors in our beautiful reserves, but two years ago she took the position as a Tourism Officer based at Buffelsfontein Visitors Centre (Cape Point Nature reserve) and her role now focus’s more on Logistics and Bookings.

She misses her work as a mountain guide, but she needed to take this position to be able to provide more for her 9 year old son and also to spend more reasonable hours with him.

Gcobisa originally had plans to be involved with politics when she moved to Cape Town 5 years ago, but the mountain guide internship grabbed her attention. Who knows where she will be in 5 years from now? Personally, I think the political field would benefit to have a person of her calibre in their company.

Gcobisa, Liezl and I say thank you to you for being awesome and we truly hope that the powers that be read this article and recognise the service you are offering and reward you.

PhatRat – over and out 🙂
