Eleanor and Steve Pienaar (from Pietermaritzburg) are passionate about travel and running. They were the first South African couple to complete 7 marathons on 7 continents in 2016.

On the 1st April they flew to the North Pole to run a marathon on the sea ice, at predicted temperatures of -40 degrees to complete their Grand Slam. (A marathon on all 7 continents and at both poles).  The race is scheduled to take place on Monday 16th April.

There are 110 members of the North Pole Marathon Grand Slam Club, comprising of 88 men and 22 women. They will be the 1st South African couple to attempt this. Steve will be the 3rd South African male and Eleanor will be the 1st South African woman to become members of the club.

They have run many marathons in South Africa, including the Comrades marathon (Steve has his green number and Eleanor has her back to back). They have also run the New York, London, Great Wall, Sydney, Rio and Antarctic Ice marathons.

Married for 23 years, they run all the international marathons together

“Our chosen charity is Msunduzi Hospice as Steve lost his mother and running partner of 20 years to cancer in the past few years. I have also been working with the Epworth Foundation to start up a bursary for talented and deserving young girls without the means to get a world class education.“
