I met up with Dr Tertius in his home town, Durbanville for a coffee and chat a week before he leaves on his third leg of Cycle-Miles-for-Smiles.

Dr T: “I have always enjoyed cycling but never done endurance cycling. Amongst others, I received my inspiration from Keegan Longueira and decided to cycle 3 legs.

First was in Europe – 600 km and decided because I am doing three legs, the subsequent leg/’s need to be three times longer than the previous.

I then cycled from Pretoria to Cape Town – 2000 km and on the 3rd of June, I leave New York heading westwards ending in San Francisco and cycling 2 geographical smile shapes and 8000 km later crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on the 29th of July

His goal: to inspire people and raise funds to restore hope and dignity of children and adults in poverty stricken areas

He will be averaging 175 km per day and in this time he will have 12 rest days where he will be making public appearances and talks in various cities raising awareness for his Cycle-Miles-for-Smiles campaign of which Operation Smile and Mercy Ships are beneficiaries.

Giving up his private practice in 2006, Dr T is a full time volunteer surgeon for the above mentioned organisations.

His calling is to:

  • Help the poor
  • Spread the word to agnostics and atheists
  • Support for prostitutes
